There is following formula is used in the calculation of BMI.

Imperial Units

In imperial units the formula of BMI,

BMI = 703 × (mass/height ²)

Where,

Mass in lbs (pounds)

Height in inch

SI, Metric Units

In the International System of Units, the formula of BMI is,

BMI = mass/height ²

Where,

Mass in kg

Height in meter

What is an Ideal BMI?

If your BMI level is coming between 18.5 to 24.9, then it is a good condition that your weight is perfect, now you neither need to reduce it nor increase it, just maintain it.

If your BMI is less than 18.5 then you are underweight and need to increase it.

If your BMI is 25 or more, then this condition indicates obesity or being overweight.  This condition can invite many diseases, but it needs to be reduced.

BMI Calculation

Question

If the weight of a person is 60 kg and the height is 150 cm, then what will be the BMI of that person?

Solution

Given Data,

Mass = 60 kg

Height = 150 cm

Now convert height from cm to meters

As we know,

1 cm = 0.01 m

So,

150 × 0.01 meter

1.5 meter

As we know BMI Formula for SI units,

BMI = mass/height ²

BMI = 60/1.5 ²

BMI = 26.6 kg/m ²

So, the BMI is greater than 25 this condition indicates obesity or being overweight.

Limitations of BMI

BMI should not be used for bodybuilders, athletes, pregnant women, the elderly, or young children as it may not calculate accurately in these cases.  Indeed, BMI does not take into account whether weight can be taken as muscle or fat.

For example, the weight of pregnant women is not only theirs but also the weight of the child to be included in it.

It is also important to note that BMI cannot be the basis for a healthy body and standard weight of age and gender.

BMI can be found out whether your body weight is right according to your height or not, but it also has its own limitations.  How much fat or fat is stored in any part of your body, cannot be ascertained through BMI.

BMI is an indicator of healthy body weight, but it also has its limits.

BMI cannot accurately measure a person's overall proportions or composition. Everyone's body is different due to muscle mass, bone mass, and fat, and it is not fair to believe whether a healthy body is or not on the basis of standard BMI alone.
